Some of our herring count volunteers have noticed that water is not flowing down the fish ladder at Old Oaken Bucket Pond on the First Herring Brook. This is due to the town of Scituate’s concerns over the recent dry conditions and wells being currently offline. The state announced today that Southeastern Massachusetts is in a Level 2 Significant Drought. We hope to meet with town officials next week to discuss the current and projected conditions and the need for the town to implement an outside watering ban. We urge all residents to not use drinking water to irrigate lawns and to always conserve this precious shared resource so we have enough for essential needs – like firefighting, drinking, cooking, farms and nature!
Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Kathleen Theoharides declared a Level 2 – Significant Drought in the Southeast Region and a Level 1 – Mild Drought in the Western, Connecticut River Valley, Central, Northeast and Cape Cod Regions. The Islands Region is in a Level 0 – Normal condition. Read more on the Mass.gov drought status page.
