The William. E. Newell Memorial Playground is a small park in the Idlewell neighborhood in Weymouth. Located on Mill Cove on the Fore River, it features a baseball field, a basketball court, and a large grassy area. A small beach serves as a potential launch site for canoes and kayaks for those who don’t mind carrying a boat across the park.
It’s important to know that some of our freshwater fisheries are contaminated with mercury, PFAS and/or other concerning substances. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health maintains an online database with up-to-date advisories regarding fish consumption, sorted by location. We recommend you consult this valuable resource when planning a fishing excursion.
Features
This older playground is named for William E. Newell. It features a swing set and a play structure.
This land is within the region of the Massachusett (or Massachuseuk). To learn more about local Native American tribes, we encourage you to interact with their members. The Mattakeeset band of the Massachusett, and the Massachusett tribe at Ponkapoag, both share information on their websites.
Follow the Fore River Watershed Association more information about the Monatiquot and Fore Rivers.

Habitats and Wildlife
The park consists mostly of a grassy field is surrounded by maple and sumac trees. Along the edge of the Fore River there is a small pebbly beach and some salt marsh. There is an osprey platform (currently unoccupied) on the beach.
The Fore River serves as the boundary line between the towns of Weymouth and Braintree. It flows for about 3 miles, into Quincy, where it meets Town River, and then flows for another 2 miles into Hingham Bay. In its final few miles, the Fore River is nearly a mile wide in some places.
