Rocky Point Preserve

Rocky Point Preserve, 302 Rocky Hill Rd, Plymouth, MA 02360, USA

Town of Plymouth: 508-747-1620

Owned By: Town of Plymouth

Rocky Point Preserve features a 0.4-mile trail that extends through forest and freshwater wetlands to a vista on a high bluff overlooking the ocean. There is a short, steep loop at the end of the trail, but no beach access. On a clear day, you may be able to see Saquish, Duxbury and the Outer Cape.Hunting is allowed, in season, by licensed persons in compliance with Massachusetts law. Please be sure to understand state and local hunting guidelines before proceeding. Non-hunters, be mindful of hunting seasons, and wear bright orange if you’re entering the property during those times. Hunting is not permitted on Sundays.

The Town of Plymouth cautions visitors as follows: “Please be aware that the ocean vista is on a high bluff which can be inherently and unpredictably dangerous. A railing has been installed but will not stop someone from going around it or under it, so please exercise caution and personal responsibility when approaching this viewpoint. We also remind visitors that there is a leash law throughout Town; keeping dogs leashed will prevent your furry friend from getting too close to the bluff.”

Features

This land is within the region of the Wampanoag. To learn more about local Native American tribes, we encourage you to interact with their members. The Mashpee Wampanoag and the Herring Pond Wampanoag share information on their websites.

Trail Description

A large metal gate adjacent to the parking area marks the trailhead. The trail begins as a wide dirt road and winds through an open woodland for about 0.3 miles. There is a large clearing at the end, surrounded with boulders, soon to be a pollinator garden. The trail continues around the northern side of the garden, and then turns steeply downhill. Soon after, look for the wooden railing that marks the look-out point. The trail continues in a short loop for another 0.1 mile or so, and passes by an old stone wall.

Habitats and Wildlife

The forest here is composed primarily of oak, pine, beech, white birch and cedar trees, including some remarkably large white birches. Don’t miss the very large beech tree at the property entrance! There are some freshwater wetlands to the eastern side of the trail as well. At the end of the trail, you can view a rocky ocean beach, from atop a high bluff, but you cannot access it directly. The waters on this property flow to Cape Cod Bay.

Recent (2024) improvements to the property include the creation of a pollinator habitat.
