South Shore Country Club: 781-749-1747
Owned By: Town of Hingham
The South Shore Country Club is a 154-acre town-owned property, on beautiful rolling lands that feature an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, a bowling alley and a clubhouse with a restaurant and function rooms. In winter, the hills are popular for sledding and cross-country skiing.
Features
The South Shore Country Club was founded in 1921 as the Old Beacon Country Club, with charter members from neighboring towns pitching in to invest in the enterprise. The original 9-hole golf course opened for play in 1923. The clubhouse — which remains in place today — was built in 1923 and designed by Harold F. Kellog. The remaining 9 holes were constructed over the next two years and opened for play in 1925. The course was designed by Wayne Stiles. After a few changes in ownership, the South Shore Country Club was purchased by the Town of Hingham in 1988.
We encourage you to follow and support Friends of the South Shore Country Club.

Trail Description
This is an active golf course, so walking is not encouraged. However in the winter, when there is snow on the ground and golf is inactive, this is a popular spot for sledding and cross-country skiing. Use the main parking lot, or look for roadside parking on New Bridge Street.
Habitats and Wildlife
This grassy property with rolling hills is part of the Weymouth Back River watershed. The open fields are bordered with oak, cedar and maple trees. The wetlands and streams here flow into Bear Swamp, and onward to the Fresh River, and eventually into the Back River.
The Weymouth Back River rises from several ponds and swamps, including Whitman Pond in Weymouth. It flows for about 10 miles, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Hingham Bay, just south of Grape Island and Slate Island.
