In a few weeks, Marshfield residents will be asked to vote to approve $228,900 in CPA funds for the design, engineering, cost estimate and permit preparation for a new section of the South River Park at 2160 Ocean St. The land was purchased last year using CPA funds that were also approved at Town Meeting. This is simply the next step toward turning this ½ acre of underutilized, blighted land into an attractive natural park.
This project will improve the visual landscape of the gateway to Marshfield’s commercial downtown and increase access to the South River. The vision for this site includes an accessible walking path that will extend the existing path to the edge of the South River, disability-compliant seating near the river’s edge, and improved riverfront condition with debris removal, better stormwater runoff, and native plants. Similar to the Veterans Memorial Park Dam removal project across the street (which we wrote about in the last E-news) this project will not only benefit the environment but also local businesses and the community as a whole.
In preparation for the December 16th Town Meeting, Marshfield’s Open Space Committee is holding two site visits to help residents better understand this project and to address any questions. During these tours, people can view the existing South River Park and hear the vision for the adjacent property at 2160 Ocean Street.
